Weekly SPI dips marginally

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week ended on January 29, 2026 has registered a marginal decline of 0.03 percent owing to a reduction in the prices of Potatoes 7.81 percent, onions 6.66 percent, salt powder 1.36 percent, wheat flour 1.17 percent, pulse masoor 0.75 percent, eggs 0.30 percent, gur 0.24 percent and rice basmati broken 0.08 percent.

The SPI related data released here on Friday by Pakistan Bureau of Statistic (PBS) said that during the week under review prices of the following items witnessed an increase: tomatoes 7.53 percent, chicken 3.25 percent, bananas 3.07 percent, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) 1.56 percent, pulse mash 1.49 percent, pulse gram 1.31 percent, chillies powder 0.66 percent, pulse moong 0.61 percent, firewood 0.37 percent, vegetable ghee 2.5Kg 0.32 percent, shirting 0.25 percent and cigarettes 0.24 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 18 items, 32.29 percent of the basket witnessed an increase. Prices of 9 items which is 17.65 percent of the basket witnessed a reduction and prices of 24 items which is 47.06 percent of the basket remained unchanged.

According to PBS data the Year on Year (YoY) trend depicts an increase of 4.52 percent. Major increase is observed in the prices of eggs 42.85 percent, tomatoes 41.14 percent, wheat flour 38.29 percent, gas charges for Q1 29.85 percent, chillies powder 13.30 percent, beef 12.65 percent, firewood 11.54 percent, LPG 11.31 percent, powdered milk 10 percent, gur 9.25 percent, shirting 8.49 percent and bananas 8.33 percent.

As per PBS on YoY basis a decrease was observed in the prices of potatoes 47.35 percent, garlic 35.89 percent, onions 31.40 percent, pulse gram 26.16 percent, tea Lipton 17.79 percent, chicken 14.88 percent, pulse mash 10.94 percent, salt powder 9.80 percent, diesel 1.27 percent and petrol 0.95 percent.

The SPI for consumption groups up to Rs17,732 with a reduction of 0.15 percent recorded at 323.80 against 324.30 points in the previous week.

The SPI for consumption group of Rs17,732 to 22,888 witnessed a reduction of 0.12 percent was recorded at 324.25 points against 324.65 points registered in the past week. Whereas the SPI for the income group Rs22,889-29,517 with a reduction of 0.09 percent was recorded at 346.06 points against 346.38points of previous week.

The SPI for the income group Rs29,518-44,175 with a reduction of 0.07 percent was recorded at 332.86 points against 333.16 points of the previous week and SPI for the monthly income group above Rs44,175 witnessed an increase of 0.02 percent was recorded at 331.86 points against 331.80 points registered in previous week.

The combined increase for all expenditure groups recorded at 333.49 points against 333.60 points calculated in the previous week, which reflect a weekly reduction of 0.03percent.
